This artwork by Kat Ball from Stopgap Dance Company is proudly hosted here as part of DAiSY’s biggest exhibition yet, LAYERS. The exhibition will take place at The Belfry Shopping Centre in Redhill as part of Reigate & Banstead’s Arts Takeover from 5 – 13 October 2024.
My Whys is a sound work created by artist Kat Ball, as an intimate reflection on her relationship with dance and the story of life in a disabled body. Kat goes through multiple subjective positions of self to consider what freedom is.
A choreography delivered in her own words, Kat takes us on a journey that is simultaneously universal in resonance and uniquely personal.

Dance Tapes
Stopgap Dance Company‘s ‘Dance Tapes’, is a series of choreographies of speech and sound created by disabled dance artists from the UK, Japan, the Netherlands and Zimbabwe.
The project is an intimate experience for audiences, highlighting the disabled dance artists’ lived experiences through an interweaving choreography of speech and sound.
Alongside the audio choreography audiences can access artistic transcripts to accompany the pieces, deepening the experience.
Information from Stopgap about Creative Transcripts
As Dance Tapes is audio-based, we wanted to provide access for those whose sensory experience doesn’t prioritise sound. We’ve created transcripts that notate all spoken text and include descriptions of the soundtrack and music, supporting all listeners to engage with the audio work – not just Deaf audiences, but also those with different levels of audio-processing. There are two versions, one is creatively designed and uses typography, the other is a plain text word document. We encourage you to explore these as you listen.
