Matilda Sharpley

I explore themes of equality from broad perspectives, leaving space for the viewer to home in on their experiences of injustice and I believe the emotions we feel can be universal no matter the cause. I want my audience to consider what is needed for a fairer society and to gently prod people to think on deeper levels about hierarchies. My goal is to encourage understanding and empathy. As a deaf woman, I fall into two minority groups forcing me to experience displacement often. I explore this through play by taking on the mind of a curious child. I experiment by using my own pain and fear. I choose not to explicitly reveal I am disabled in my work, preferring to show the the raw human feelings that are experienced by all. I was deafened by Pneumococcal Meningitis shortly after my first birthday. Currently, I am undertaking a Fine arts degree.
